Davis to expand Valley View clubhouse

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 7, 2008

FARMINGTON -- Davis County's Valley View Golf Course is getting that clubhouse addition after all.

Tuesday, Davis County commissioners awarded a $395,197 contract to Onyx Construction, of West Jordan, to build a 2,450 square-foot banquet room. Onyx's bid was the lowest of the 13 bids received for the project.

Davis County Planning Director Barry Burton called it one of the best bidding climates he's seen.

About a year ago, the county bid out the project, but because bids came in well above what the county had estimated, commissioners scrapped it, opting to wait until this year and hoping for more favorable bids.

They got their wish.

Nearly all of the bids were within cost estimates, Burton said.

Valley View head golf pro Matt Lyons said the expected April completion date for the clubhouse expansion is perfect for when the course hosts this year's Utah State Amateur Championship, an amateurs-only tournament golfers have to qualify to get into.

Normally, that tournament isn't held at public golf courses because a limited number of rounds are played during the tournament, meaning the golf course has to forgo its fees for five days.

But hosting the tournament at Valley View, which is located in Layton, will bring a spotlight to the course and is expected to attract more golfers in advance of the tournament and afterward, Lyons said.

"Our course is the best shape it's ever been in," he said.

The addition of the banquet room is also expected to attract other tournament groups, meetings, receptions and banquets, which the course had been missing out on, Lyons said.
