Topic: RSS FeedForgive student loans
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 27, 2008
As I read about a new bailout package being proposed in Congress, I can't help but wonder how this helps the little guy. I understand the "unfreezing" of the credit market and that if these big companies fail, many people will be harmed. However, there must be a better way to use taxpayer money to assist Americans through this economic downturn.
One proposal I have is to forgive student loans. It may be prudent to restrict such a program to those who have earned their degrees (thereby eliminating a free ride for "eternal students"), but such a plan would be a boon to millions of middle-class Americans.
This is a win-win situation that assists the little guys who have worked hard to get through school and puts real money in Americans' pockets instead of giving passes to CEOs. If the government must get involved in the economy, it should do so by forgiving student loans.
