Mervyns sites to reopen as Forever 21s, Kohl's

A pair of shuttered Mervyns stores in Utah will be replaced by Forever 21 or Kohl's, according to shopping center owner Macerich.

Macerich said Friday that Forever 21 will replace Mervyns at the South Towne Center in Sandy and that Kohl's would replace Mervyns at the Brickyard Plaza in Salt Lake City.

Twenty-two of 41 Macerich-owned Mervyns sites acquired in December 2007 and early 2008 will be sites for Forever 21 and Kohl's. The actions require approval of a court overseeing the Mervyns bankruptcy proceedings.

Macerich said Forever 21 and Kohl's won in an auction of Mervyns leaseholds earlier this month. Court approval is expected within the month, Macerich said. Both successors expect to open at their new sites next year.

Macerich is a real estate investment trust that is the sole general partner and owns an 86 percent interest in The Macerich Partnership LP. Macerich owns 77 million square feet of leasable space, consisting primarily of interests in 72 malls.
