Fonar Corp. (Nasdaq: FONR) said Friday the University of Aberdeen in Scotland has installed the first stand-up MRI in Europe and begun using it for a study.
The firm said the unit was installed at the university's Woodend Hospital.
Francis W. Smith, a director at the University's new Positional MRI Research Centre, said the equipment was being used to study the effects of orthotics on the ankle and knee.
"As a research institute, the University of Aberdeen is now in position to confirm what we have seen ourselves - that the effects of imaging with MRI in the weight-bearing position are dramatic and important to the patient and his doctor," said Dr. Raymond Damadian, Fonar founder and president.
The University of Aberdeen last year was designated by the European Union as one of the centers of excellence in medical imaging.
