Hofstra hosts Special Olympics

Special Olympics New York selected Hofstra University in Hempstead as the site of the 2003 and 2004 statewide Summer Games.

More than 2,800 athletes and coaches from across New York will attend the event, the largest of more than 400 Special Olympics competitions held annually in New York and the culminating competition for Summer Games athletes.

The games will take place June 12 to 15, 2003, and June 17 to 20, 2004.

Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and competition in 23 Olympic-style sports for children and adults with mental retardation. Summer Games athletes will compete in basketball, bowling, gymnastics, power lifting, roller skating, swimming, tennis, track & field and volleyball.

Special Olympics competitions offer opportunities for residents, youth groups and civic groups to volunteer, sponsor athletes and supply in-kind donations. Corporate sponsorships also are offered.

Epilepsy Foundation turns 50

The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a "Golden Anniversary Dinner-Dance" at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury April 4 at 6 p.m.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island was founded in 1953 by a small group of concerned parents determined to see their children lead productive, satisfying lives. Today, the foundation provides education, day program, residential services and counseling to Long Island residents with epilepsy and related conditions.

The foundation provides support groups and counseling for people with epilepsy and their families.

Free cardiac screening

St. Francis Hospital - The Heart Center is conducting free screenings through its mobile outreach clinic at Project Challenge in Long Beach.

Screenings are being offered on Jan. 15 and Jan. 29; Feb. 12 and Feb. 26; March 12 and March 26; and April 9 and April 23, all from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Eligible for screenings are individuals 18 years of age or older, without medical insurance, who do not have Medicare, or who have Medicaid only.

Screening consists of a health evaluation and blood pressure and EKG testing by St. Francis Hospital cardiologists and nurses.

A Spanish-speaking interpreter is available.

Red Cross courses save lives

The American Red Cross in Nassau County is hosting health and safety courses to teach children, parents, grandparents and coaches how to save lives.

Gift certificates and first aid kits are also available. Courses are taught at ARC/Nassau, 195 Willis Ave., Mineola.
