Long Island law firms announce staff changes for December 27, 2002

Sandra C. Maliszewski, an attorney in the health law regulatory department at Ruskin Moscou Faltischek in Uniondale and a practicing midwife, was appointed to the New York State Board for Midwifery.

Maliszewski, of Westbury, is one of seven licensed midwives on the 13-member board. The board governs the licensed midwives in the state and advises the regents and education department on all aspects of professional education, licensing, practice and discipline.

At Ruskin Moscou, she specializes in regulatory health care, working with health care professionals as well as hospitals focusing on fraud and abuse, health insurance, billing issues and institutional corporate compliance matters.

Scully, Scott, Murphy and Presser, an intellectual property law firm in Garden City hired Heidi Reese, a Ph.D. in chemistry, as a patent attorney.

Prior to joining Scully Scott, Reese was director of organic chemistry labs at Barnard College of Columbia University. Prior to that, she was director of general chemistry labs and adjunct associate professor at New York University.

In her new role, Reese will assist a broad range of domestic and international clients in patent prosecution and opinions, particularly in the areas of semiconductors and chemistry including organic chemistry, biochemistry and pharmaceutical arts.

Douglas E. Spelfogel was named a partner in the Garden City office of Nixon Peabody.

Prior to joining Nixon Peabody, Spelfogel, of Rockville Centre, was a partner in the bankruptcy department of Berkman, Henoch, Peterson & Peddy in Garden City.

Spelfogel also served as a bankruptcy attorney and senior trial attorney with the Office of U.S. States Trustee for the U.S. Department of Justice in Garden City, where he spent seven years overseeing some of the largest Chapter 11 cases in the Eastern District of New York. This was an "appointment with distinction" under the U.S. Attorney General's Honors Program.
