Sustainable Long Island of Huntington was awarded a $45,000 grant from The Long Island Community Foundation, Henry Philip Kraft Fund to support Sustainable Long Island's program that encourages the redevelopment of brownfield sites.

The program promotes the redevelopment of lightly polluted sites that have been abandoned while preserving open space.

Sustainable Long Island has facilitated $1.5 million of public investment in brownfields redevelopment across the region.

$30,000 for burn unit/Firemen's Museum

TV and movie stars raised $30,000 in a charity softball game recently held against a team of Brookhaven volunteer firefighters. The proceeds will support the burn unit at Stony Brook University Hospital and the Brookhaven Firemen's Museum.

More than 3,000 spectators at the Suffolk PAL Stadium in Holbrook saw Jason Wiles and other cast members of the TV show, "Third Watch;" film actor Chris Klein of "American Pie;" and Justin Long from the TV show, "Ed," play Brookhaven Town Supervisor John Jay LaValle's All Star Volunteer Firemen.

The celebrities won the game, 23-22.

Compare Foods is sponsoring a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Help where shoppers can purchase donation cards

for $1 while checking out at store registers.

All proceeds will be donated to Breast Cancer Help's specialized programs for cancer patients and survivors at the

organization's new Cancer Help and Wellness Center in Lindenhurst. These programs aim to increase early detection while providing patients and survivors with the support they need to overcome cancer.

Compare Foods has locations in New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The five local locations participating in the fundraiser are located in Bay Shore, Commack, Brentwood, Central Islip and Farmingville.

Little Flower's Golf Classic set for 9/15

Little Flower Children's Services is holding its annual Golf Classic at Nissequogue Golf Club in Saint James

on Sept. 15.

The event includes breakfast, tournament tee-off, a barbeque lunch, beverages, awards reception, cocktails and buffet dinner.

In addition, Competition Import will award a Mercedes Benz C230 as a hole-in-one prize.

Little Flower Children's Services cares for children and developmentally disabled adults who have lost, or have been separated from their families.

Tickets are $300 per participant, and include all food and refreshments as well as 18 holes of golf.

White-A-Thon fundraiser

Dentist Ira Koeppel is hosting a

'White-A-Thon' fundraiser in his East Setauket office on Oct. 11 to benefit the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund.

The success of White-A-Thons held in prior years helped raise more than $36,000 for Breast Cancer and World Trade Center organizations. Participants will receive a custom-fitted professional teeth-whitening kit for a tax-deductible donation of $200 (regularly $450).

Harlem Book Fair comes to LI

The Long Island Partnership for Community Education and the African Atlantic Genealogical Society will be hosting the Harlem Book Fair on Long Island Sept. 20 at the Freeport Recreation Center from noon to 6 p.m.

The book fair was established in Harlem five years ago in an effort to promote community education, literary arts and literacy.

The event includes storytellers, clowns, face-painters and a balloon-twister.

Philanthropy Day 2003

The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Long Island Chapter named George Richardson as vice chairman and awards chairman of Philanthropy Day 2003.

Richardson is director for planned giving and director for the annual fund at Hofstra University in Hempstead.

Each year, the Association of Fundraising Professionals selects one day in November to celebrate the spirit of philanthropy nationwide.

This year, the Long Island chapter will host its 16th annual Philanthropy Day event Nov. 21 at the Long Island Marriott in Uniondale.

Organizers anticipate more than 700 participants will attend.

Paws for Parkinson's dog walk fundraiser

The "Paws for Parkinson's" dog walk will take place Oct. 26 in Marjorie R. Post Park in Massapequa.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and the event is expected to run until 2 p.m.

The walk, sponsored by the Nassau and Suffolk chapters of the American Parkinson Disease Association, will feature refreshments, informational tables, demonstrations and a grand prize for whoever brings in the most donations for Parkinson's research.

The top fundraiser and canine will be treated to a stay at the exclusive pet-friendly Atlantic Hotel in Southampton. Each dog will receive a bandana. T-shirts will also be available.

Proceeds benefit Parkinson's disease research.
