New York-based Hofstra University awarded $11.5M to improve math

Hofstra University in Hempstead was awarded an $11.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to improve middle school achievement in mathematics. Hofstra will be the lead partner in a partnership titled, "The MSTP (Math, Science and Technology Partnership) Project: Mathematics Across the MST Curriculum."

Dr. M. David Burghardt, the Jean Nerkin Distinguished Professor of Engineering and chairman of computer science at Hofstra, will serve as principal investigator on the grant.

As lead partner in the program, Hofstra will oversee the management and fiscal responsibility for this program.

Additional partners include Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, CUNY and the NYS Education Department.

LIIC raises $250,000 for United Way

The Long Island Insurance Community's ninth annual gala recently held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchell Field raised $250,000 to benefit United Way of Long Island's more than 180 health and human care service member agencies.

LIIC is dedicated to raising funds for health and human service needs in the Long Island community.
