Friends of Karen appointed Peter Ferrara to the Long Island Advisory Board. Ferrara is the senior executive vice president of Sovereign Bank and managing director of the commercial equipment and vehicle financing group at the bank.

Previously, Ferrara worked in marketing and managing roles for American Express and Citicorp.

Friends of Karen is a children's charity that provides financial and emotional support to families with children who have life- threatening illnesses.

Kristin Crosby was appointed to the board of directors of Project GRAD, an education reform organization working with the Roosevelt Union Free School District.

Crosby will bring financial expertise to the board. Currently she works as vice president of sales at the Investor Services Division of JP Morgan Chase and Co.

Crosby earned a degree in business administration from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and is a graduate of the Women Unlimited Leadership Program.

Joan Convery was appointed vice president of human resources at the Community Development Corporation of Long Island, a not-for- profit organization that helps individuals, families and businesses throughout Long Island build assets and wealth.

Previously, she was executive assistant to the chief executive officer, executive vice president, office manager and human resources manager at the organization. Convery has been a CDC member since 1993 and has more that 20 years experience in office administration.

Convery is active in numerous professional organizations, including the Society of Human Resources Managers and Human Resources Committee of the Hauppauge Industrial Association.

Michelle McFaul was appointed to the newly created position of executive director of the Hoffman Center in Muttontown.

The Hoffman Center is a mansion purchased eight years ago by Ursula and William Niarakis, who have devoted their efforts to restoring the mansion.

McFaul comes aboard to help direct operations and develop environmental, educational and historical preservation programs as the mansion switches from restoration mode to operational.

Previously, McFaul was a deputy commissioner at the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums. Before working for the county, she was principal of McFaul Public Relations, which specialized in corporate and not-for-profit management.
