State of New York auditing four Long Island school districts

Long Island Business News, Aug 6, 2004 by LIBN Staff

The Lawrence, Manhasset, Hempstead and Brentwood school districts will be the subject of in-depth audits by the New York State Comptroller's Office, Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi announced Tuesday.

The audits are part of the comptroller's response to financial scandals at the Roslyn and William Floyd schools districts.

We received information about 30 school districts and we chose to look at the ones where an audit seemed most likely to be useful, Hevesi said in a statement. But allegations are just that, allegations. I have no knowledge that anyone in any of these districts has done anything improper and no one should jump to any conclusions.

Hevesi added that 15 other school districts on Long Island will have administrative expenses examined. Those districts include East Meadow, Locust Valley, North Shore, Plainedge, Syosset and Westbury (in Nassau) and the Three Village, Central Islip and Wyandanch districts (in Suffolk). A process is under way to select the remaining districts for the administrative audit.
