NY State comptroller to audit Miller Place schools

Long Island Business News, Nov 5, 2004 by LIBN Staff

New York State Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi plans to audit the Miller Place Union Free School District in Suffolk County for administrative expenses, such as credit card usage, meals and travel.

Miller Place is the 21st Long Island school district being audited by Hevesi's office, including five in-depth audits and 16 administrative audits.

We were contacted by a number of concerned residents who requested an audit of Miller Place, but we have no knowledge that anyone in the district has done anything inappropriate, Hevesi said in a statement. Seven of the 16 administrative audits have commenced. Those are Baldwin, East Meadow, Elmont, Massa-pequa, Plainedge, Syosset and Westbury.

Audits of the Central Islip, East Islip, Locust Valley, Miller Place, North Shore, Riverhead, Sachem, Three Village and Wyandanch school districts will begin later this fall and in early 2005, Hevesi said.

In-depth audits examining internal controls over financial operations such as purchasing, payroll, cash collections and accounting and detailed testing of individual transactions are underway in the Roslyn, Brentwood, Hempstead, Lawrence and Manhasset districts.
