Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf received $60,000 from the Laura J. Niles Foundation, the first installment of a three-year grant totaling $180,000.
The money will support Mill Neck's Literacy Collaborative Program, which helps students develop better reading and writing skills by immersing them in the study. Elementary-school students receive three hours of literacy lessons, and parents are trained to find reading opportunities for their children in their day-to-day lives.
