The C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University hired Gerald D. Nichols in January to head its Palmer Institute for Public Library Organization and Management. The program offers advanced certificates for public library administration.
Nichols earned his master's degree from the Palmer School in 1974. He later served as director of the Babylon Public Library, Freeport Memorial Library and Half Hollow Hills Community Library of Dix Hills. Since 1991, Nichols has served as director of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System.
As program administrator, Nichols will coordinate the Public Library Education curriculum for students enrolled at the Palmer School. He will also be involved in student recruitment, academic advisement and job placement, and will teach many courses, workshops and seminars.
Of his new position, Nichols said, There's a critical need in the public sector for qualified and motivated library administrators. I'm pleased to work with Long Island University in addressing that need.
The Palmer program also includes a continuing education program for library trustees and mid-level staff.
Mr. Nichols is well known for his expertise in library management, law, finance and technology, said Mary Westermann-Cicio, interim dean of the Palmer School. His extensive experience in the public library field made him an excellent choice for the director position.
