John Malone, chief executive of Liberty Media, has resigned from the board of Cablevision Systems, prompting speculation about the meaning of the departure.
In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Cablevision said Malone indicated that he was resigning to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest. Liberty Media has stakes in cable channels including Discovery, Court TV and QVC shopping network. Cablevision's Rainbow Media unit has networks that include American Movie Classics and WE: Women's Entertainment.
One analyst, quoted by the Associated Press, suggested that Malone could be leaving because of plans to form a partnership with Cablevision.
