Verizon rolls out $14.95 DSL service

Long Island Business News, Aug 26, 2005 by LIBN Staff

In a challenge to the popular Optimum Online broadband service offered by Cablevision Systems, Verizon Communications is rolling out a version of its DSL service for $14.95 a month.

The budget service cuts Verizon's lowest broadband price in half, though Internet speed is limited (768 kilobits per second downstream and 128 Kbps upstream) and a one-year commitment is required.

The new service, dubbed Verizon Yahoo for DSL, includes features from Yahoo such as commercial-free LAUNCHcast Radio service.

The move comes as Verizon also is rolling out its FiOS fiber- optic service in parts of Long Island. FiOS provides high-speed broadband at prices ranging from $34.95 to $179.95 a month when bought with a calling package.

Cablevision has had success offering Optimum Online as part of a triple-play package with TV and voice service for about $90 for the first 12 months.
