Abandoned Long Island Rail Road station may reopen

Long Island Business News, May 1, 2008 by David Winzelberg

The Metropolitan Transit Authority will study the feasibility of reopening of the Long Island Rail Road's Republic station in East Farmingdale.

The station at Route 110 and Conklin Ave. used to be a stop on the LIRR's Main Line when the Fairchild Republic aircraft manufacturing company employed hundreds on the now abandoned site.

Re-opening the station is the centerpiece for a transit-oriented development plan that could add 1.2 million square feet of new retail, office, residential, entertainment and hotel uses, and is supported by Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone, Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone, Rep. Steve Israel, and the Route 110 Redevelopment Corp.

Once the hub of aviation activity, the former Fairchild facility stretches for 11 acres east from Route 110 to New Highway, and now resembles an industrial ghost town. Bellone said buses would connect workers along the 110 corridor if the LIRR station gets reopened.
