Education
Patti Cantamessa has joined Farmingdale State College as an assistant professor in the nursing department. Cantamessa, a registered nurse, received her Masters of Science in nursing through the contemporary nursing faculty program at Drexel University in 2008.
Joanne Lapidus-Graham, an associate professor of nursing in Farmingdale's school of health sciences, is the recipient of the Nursing Education Award from the New York State Nurses Association. Lapidus-Graham was honored for her work in encouraging students to question their environment and actively participate in legislative activities that promote positive outcomes for patient care.
Shaun L. McKay, interim executive vice president of Suffolk County Community College, has been selected as one of only 33 community college leaders to attend the Executive Leadership Institute sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College. The 33 participants hold leadership positions in community colleges throughout the United States, Canada and New Zealand.
Financial Services
Mary DeLuca, president and founder of Preferred Resume Group in Manhasset and a certified professional resume writer, has been awarded the first-ever Certified Resume Specialist in Financial Services designation from the Career Directors International Board of Certification.
Health Care
Dr. Scott Brunengraber, director of Smithtown Wellness in Smithtown, has been appointed president of the New York Chiropractor Council's first district, which represents Suffolk County. Dr. Brunengraber was formerly the alternate to the president of the district.
Law
Danielle Notaro has been named an associate of Forchelli, Curto, Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo, Cohn & Terrana, which has offices in Uniondale and Melville. A graduate of Hofstra University School of Law, Notaro concentrates her practice in the areas of litigation, bankruptcy and insolvency, and employment and labor law. Notaro formerly worked as a law clerk for the firm.
The Nassau County Bar Association has named retired Manhasset attorney Rudolph de Winter the Pro Bono Attorney of the Month for December. Over the past six years, De Winter has donated 3,000 hours of service to the Volunteer Lawyers Project.
Phil Rizzuto has been named chairman of the New York State Nursing Home Litigation Group. Rizzuto is a member of the Carle Place law firm Philip J. Rizzuto, for which nursing home neglect is an area of focus.
Nonprofits
Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, which is based in Hempstead, welcomed new board member Karen Seltzer. Seltzer currently serves on several boards, including the Community Synagogue in Port Washington, the Port Washington Education Foundation and The Community Chest of Port Washington.
Science
Six scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton have been named fellows of the American Physical Society. Election to fellowship, limited to no more than one-half of 1 percent of APS members in a given year, indicates recognition by scientific peers for outstanding contributions to physics.
James Alessi, who joined BNL as an assistant physicist in 1979, is currently the group leader of the collider-accelerator department's pre-injector group. Charles Black, who came to BNL as a scientist and group leader in 2006, manages the electronic nanomaterials group of the center for functional nanomaterials. After joining BNL in 1996 as an associate physicist, G. Lawrence Carr, a former staff scientist for Northrop Grumman, was promoted to physicist in 1998. Milind Diwan, who began his career as a research associate at Stanford University, came to BNL as an assistant physicist in 1994 and was promoted to physicist five years later. Gregory Hall, promoted to senior chemist in 2001, has worked for BNL for more than 22 years. Finally, Thomas Ullrich, who joined BNL in 2001, is an adjunct professor at Yale University.
