Colorado Springs Real Estate Briefs: June 3, 2005

Colorado Springs Business Journal, Jun 3, 2005 by Stephanie Cline

GE Johnson is set to break ground on the San Juan Cancer Center in Montrose this month. The 14,600 square foot cancer center is a $3.8 million project slated for completion in March 2006.

GE Johnson is working with H+L Architecture on the project.

Headquartered in Colorado Springs, GE Johnson does a great deal of work in the Centennial State, but also has projects elsewhere in the country.

The company has broken ground on the Hendrik & Gezina Meijer Surgery and Patient Care Center expansion of the Spectrum Health United Memorial - United Campus in Greenville, Mich. The $17 million project includes a new three-story, 61,000-square-foot addition.

The addition was designed by Davis Partnership Architects.

GE Johnson began construction on Phase 3 of the Village at Northstar in Truckee, Calif. on May 1. East West Partners awarded the $97.6 million project. Phase 3 is scheduled to be complete in November 2006.

Realtor organization donates $177,000

The Colorado Association of Realtors Housing Opportunity Fund (CARHOF) has given $177,000 to 29 nonprofit affordable housing groups. This is the total contribution for the first of two CARHOF grant cycles.

Created in 1990, CARHOF has given more than $4.2 million to nonprofit housing groups. Recipients from the first grant cycle include Neighborhood Partners, Habitat for Humanity and the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless.

To be eligible for CARHOF funding a housing organization must be based in Colorado and be a public agency or an established 501(c)(3) group.

Auf Wiedersehen!

After a wild ride with the CSBJ, it's time to say goodbye.

My husband, Rob - a staff sergeant in the Army - and I are moving to Mannheim, Germany, this summer. We expect to be in Mannheim for about three years, though anyone who has lived the military life understands how unpredictable it can be.

While I've made many great friends here and wish I could bring the staff of the CSBJ with me overseas, I have a feeling the customs officials would frown upon the human cargo.

I've also had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful folks in the real estate, construction and development sectors here in my hometown. To everyone I've interviewed for stories, thank you.

Before I cross the pond I'd like to say (or write) a few things.

First of all - this is a beautiful town. I've spent many nights watching the stars and many days sitting in the shade and goofing off in the snow and I know I will miss this place terribly.

I grew up here, went to college here (go Tigers!) and I had the incredible experience of working at an excellent business publication.

And now for some advice: Don't build without a sense of responsibility to this environment. Build and develop for the future by utilizing sustainable design and construction elements.

Maybe someday my great-great grandchildren will live, work and play here. I'd want them to see the same mountain vistas, drink the same clean water and enjoy the same open space as I have through the years.

Take the time to read about issues like sprawl and topics like Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Colorado Springs and El Paso County will only continue to grow, so now is the time to plan seriously for that growth.

I will take with me a million incredible memories of my life in Colorado Springs and I want this place to continue to look as beautiful. I will be stopping in for visits - take care of Colorado Springs while I'm gone.
