Colorado-based Westmoreland Coal Co. reports first quarter earnings

Westmoreland Coal Co. has reported first quarter 2006 pre-tax earnings of $7.6 million.

That compares to $2.7 million reported for the same quarter of last year, excluding the impact of the cumulative effect of a change in accounting principle related to workers' compensation.

The first quarter of 2006 includes the previously reported gain on the sale of the company's undivided mineral interests in two leases in southern Colorado which resulted in a pre-tax gain of about $5.1 million.

Pre-tax earnings in the first quarter of 2005 included a one- time catch-up revenue payment of $2.5 million received for past cost increases for commodities at one of the company's mines.

Springs named top arts destination

Readers of American Style magazine have selected Colorado Springs as one of the Top 25 Arts Destinations among mid-sized U.S. cities (100,000 to 499,999 residents).

According to a 2003 study by the Travel Industry Association of America, cultural tourists spend on average 36 percent more for historic/cultural trips than the average U.S. traveler, excluding the costs of transportation.

Chamber receives Chancellor's Award

The Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce has received the 2006 Chancellor's Community Award from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The award, which is usually awarded to individuals, recognizes outstanding institutional support of the university system, with emphasis on the UCCS campus.

The chamber's support of the North Nevada Urban Redevelopment Area and advocacy for Referendum C were cited by Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak as contributing reasons for this recognition.

The chamber also is involved with UCCS in the Chancellor's Roundtable, University Research Park Advisory Board, Network Information and Space Security Center Advisory Board and the Campaign Leadership Council.

Secretary of state taking over trade names

All trade names must now be filed with the Secretary of State's office.

In 2004, Gov. Bill Owens signed a bill that requires all effective trade names from the Department of Revenue to be transferred to the Secretary of State's office. Filings must be done online.

O.Z. Architecture opens Springs office

O.Z. Architecture has opened an office at 508 S. Tejon St.

The firm has ongoing projects in Colorado Springs that include Gold Hills Mesa, The Brownstones and the West Residence at The Broadmoor, Quantum Corp., Classic Communities at Flying Horse, Landco and Colorado Crossing.

The company, which was started in 1964 by Tom Obermeier and Alan Zeigel, also has offices in Denver, Boulder and Truckee, Calif.

Center for Creative Leadership ratchets up

The Center for Creative Leadership has been ranked fifth among executive education providers worldwide by the Financial Times. CCL was ranked 10th in last year's survey.

The organization, which has campuses in North America, Europe and Asia, also ranked fifth worldwide for open-enrollment programs and ninth for custom programs.

The rankings were based on surveys of organizations and individuals who rated executive education providers, such as Duke, Stanford and London Business School, for quality and impact.

CCL is a nonprofit, educational institution whose mission is to advance the understanding, practice and development of leadership for the benefit of society.

It is headquartered in Greensboro, N.C., and has locations in Colorado Springs, San Diego, Brussels, Belgium and Singapore.

Senger Design Group nets three awards

The Senger Design Group has received three awards from the American Society of Interior Design Colorado Chapter.

The company received first place in design details/elements for the Branan Residential handrail - an art nouveau custom star rail of forged steel and copper twist details with a softened patina of natural weathering and chemical etching. Another first place award, for renovation design, recognized work at the HB&A offices, where the architectural and interior design collaboration made the space fitting for business and team building.

The company received honorable mention in the hospitality under 10,000 square feet category for Rico's Coffee & Wine Bar.

Library district seeking board trustee

The Pikes Peak Library District is seeking to fill a vacancy on its Board of Trustees to fulfill a term that ends December 2009.

The volunteer position includes responsibilities of setting the library's policies and budget and overseeing library operations.
