Rampart's David Wagenfuhr has been been recognized as the Gatorade Colorado high school player of the year.
Wagenfuhr will compete with 49 other athletes across the country to win national high school player of the year honors, which be announced later this month.
Wagenfuhr led Rampart in scoring for the fourth straight year with 12 goals and 10 assists. Among his postseason awards are first- team all-Metro League, all-state academic and all-state.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Grandview 78, Liberty 64
Four players scored in double figures as No. 8 Grandview shocked the No. 1 seed Liberty, last year's Class 4A champion, in Class 4A- District 8 tournament play.
Host Liberty found itself down by 15 points by the first quarter and 19 at halftime. Grandview scored 18 points from the free-throw line while Liberty had only four.
Scott Weiner led Grandview in scoring with 21 points.
Luke Smith scored 19 points for Liberty.
Fountain-Fort Carson 69,
Pueblo Centennial 60
James Odom had with 33 points as Fountain-Fort Carson took a close win over host Pueblo Centennial in the first round of the Class 4A-District 5 tournament.
Centennial kept the score close throughout the game despite Odom's performance.
Fountain-Fort Carson was down by one point near the 2-minute mark of the fourth quarter when Fountain-Fort Carson's Deonte Waldroup took the charge to keep Michael Franklin from scoring and turned the game around for the Trojans.
"You don't get to read much about Waldroup," said Fountain-Fort Carson coach Mike Marurro. "But his play at the end of the game really turned the team around."
Odom scored 20 of his 33 points in the first half and missed only five field- goal attempts.
Mike Broadnax scored 14 points for the Trojans. Dante Bethea lead Centennial with 13 points.
Manitou Springs 68, St. Mary's 66
St. Mary's late charge put the game into overtime but the strategy in overtime failed as visiting Manitou Springs defeated the Pirates in the opening round of the 3A Tri-Peaks tournament.
Free-throw shooting kept St. Mary's in the game and most of the Manitou Springs starters on the bench as the Pirates found themselves down by as many as 15 in the first half.
But turnovers by Manitou Springs and good shot selection by St. Mary's resulted in a tie game at the end of regulation.
In overtime, the teams exchanged 3-point baskets, then Manitou Springs took the two-point lead with a minute remaining.
St. Mary's held the ball for the final minute but failed to convert.
"I was proud of the team in overtime," said Manitou Springs coach Ken Vecchio. "We turned it over in the fourth quarter and it could have been deadly for us but the boys played well."
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Grandview 48, Pine Creek 44
Not to be outdone by the Grandview boys team, the Grandview girls pulled their own upset when the No. 7-seeded Wolves defeated No. 2 Pine Creek in the Class 4A-District 8 opening round.
Host Pine Creek led by 10 points after the first quarter but Grandview rallied and went into the fourth quarter leading by three points.
Pine Creek could not take advantage of its 13-2 advantage at the free-throw line.
Evangelical Christian Academy 61, Ellicott 50
Alexis Kennedy and Kecia Wolfe scored 22 points each as host ECA took the Class 2A-District 8 opening round game against Ellicott.
Wolfe scored 19 of her points in the first half and ended the game with four 3-pointers. Emily Hammer led the Ellicott offense with 23 points, 15 coming in the third.
Evangelical Christian led by 24 points at halftime, but ECA coach Rod Johannsen knew better than to rest easy playing against Ellicott.
"They never quit," said Johannsen. "We've played them four times this year and I knew they would come back. I have to compliment them on the way they played the second half. They didn't roll over."
