Videotape of Cullen injury to be sent to WCHA official

Gazette, The (Colorado Springs),  Nov 19, 2000  by Ralph Routon

MADISON, Wis. - Colorado College's staff came to Wisconsin armed with a videotape from CC's game last Saturday against St. Cloud State, cued to the hit that left junior center Mark Cullen with a compression fracture of a neck vertebra.

The intent was to share that video with Greg Shepherd, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's supervisor of officials, who was thought to be attending the Tigers-Badgers series.

Cullen, the Tigers' leading scorer with eight goals and 15 points, was hurt when a St. Cloud player rammed him into the boards from behind. Yet no penalty was called on the play.

Cullen will be out until January, and he has to wear a neck brace for up to six weeks. Team trainer Richard Quincy said Cullen was lucky, because the injury could have been career-threatening.

CC's concern is that the NCAA's hockey rules committee specifically had listed hitting from behind as a point of emphasis for this season. That means officials should be watching for such infractions.

Shepherd didn't make it to Wisconsin this weekend, so the video wasn't delivered.

"But it'll get to them," CC trainer Richard Quincy said. "We'll make sure of that."

NO VERDICT: Tiger defenseman Paul Manning, who suffered a left- kneecap injury Friday night, sat out the Saturday series finale but will return home with his teammates today still not knowing the full extent of his problem.

Two physicians examined Manning on Saturday but couldn't determine what happened to the senior captain's knee. He'll probably undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test Monday.

"I want to see the tape to find out exactly what happened," Manning said. "I was going sideways, with nobody else around me. I caught a blade, my body went one way and the skate stuck. It's frustrating, but they did ligament-testing and everything seemed OK. We'll know more about the MRI."

Quincy said it was too early to tell how long Manning might be sidelined.
