Eric Thompson, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound junior defensive tackle from Woodland, Texas, was the first overall draft choice Thursday afternoon by the Silver team for Air Force's spring football Blue- Silver Game, which is open to the public at 11 a.m. Saturday at Falcon Stadium. The Blue team's top pick was junior 5-8, 175-pound halfback Leotis Palmer, from Darien, Ga.

The coaches divided the seniors, the quarterbacks and kickers for the two teams, then let the seniors select the other players one at a time with alternating picks. The Blue team has Chance Harridge, a sophomore in the fall, as its starting quarterback

The Silver has the two top quarterbacks entering spring practice, Keith Boyea and Bryan Blew.

Placekicker Brooks Walters, who's been impressive this spring, is on the Silver squad.

BASKETBALL INTEREST: Air Force athletic director Randy Spetman said he received at least 20 e-mails already from candidates for the women's basketball coaching position. He said that he isn't in a hurry to hire, only that he wants someone by the July recruiting season. Air Force last week fired third-year coach Sue Darling, who had a 12-70 career record.

"We need to hire a Joe Scott in women's basketball," Spetman said. "In one year here (as the men's basketball coach), Joe has been great."
