Florida trip means more than vacation for UCCS golfers

Colorado at Colorado Springs golf coach Phil Trujillo has selected the five players who will compete for the NCAA Division II national golf championship.

Jon Olson, Jayson Villagrana, Marc Hocking, Chris Sisco and John Lane leave Friday for the May 21-24 tournament, which will be played at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Rollins College is the host.

Hocking, who is second on the team in stroke average (75.5), said his team has little to lose.

"We're not favored, so we can't get nervous," he said. "We have to go for broke. It's like a seven-day vacation. Our goal all year was to make it to the nationals. Now that we're there, we want to have some fun. And if we play the best golf of our life, you never know what will happen."

UCCS TRACK

Seven Mountain Lions hold provisional qualifying times in 11 events for the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships that will be held May 23-25 at San Angelo, Texas.

Amanda Occhi and Maddi Bosen are provisionally qualified in three events - the 3,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. However, it is unlikely that both will accept invitations for all three.

Last year, three UCCS runners went to nationals in four events. Prior to that, no more than one runner had ever qualified. The top 16 qualifiers in each event make it to nationals, but many runners who qualify in multiple events opt to participate in one or two.

UCCS AWARDS

UCCS announced its most valuable players for each sport at the athletic department awards banquet on Saturday night. MVP's are: Martin Kristiseter (men's soccer), Audrey Nelson (volleyball), Amanda Occhi (women's cross country), Greg Augspurger (men's cross country), Heidi Koskovich (women's basketball), Kevin Fletcher (men's basketball), Amber Colton (softball), Jon Olson (men's golf), Mary Bollinger (women's tennis), Ronnie Stutz (men's tennis), Maddi Bosen (women's track) and Adolfo Carrillo (men's track).

CC CYCLIST WINS NATIONAL TITLE

Robert King, a Colorado College junior, won the men's Division II cycling road race last Saturday at the National Collegiate Cycling Association national championships in Montpellier, Vt.

MWC CHAMPIONSHIPS COME TO AIR FORCE

The Mountain West Conference outdoor track and field championships will be held at the Air Force Academy, starting Wednesday.

Brigham Young University is favored to win the men's and women's titles, according to Air Force coach Ralph Lindeman. The battle for second place should involve Air Force, Colorado State and New Mexico.
