Judge denies request to photograph evidence

A judge on Monday denied a defense attorney's request to photograph evidence prosecutors plan to present against three men charged in shootings April 18 that killed two in Colorado Springs.

A lawyer for Chaddrick Thomas, 24, asked to photograph evidence before it is examined by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Judge Tom Kennedy of the 4th Judicial District denied the request, finding it would delay the trial and risk contamination.

Thomas, Corey Woodard, 22, and Hosea Darnell Sullivan, 23, are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy in shootings in the parking lot of the Whitney Young Manor Apartments at 2129 Delta Drive.

Zaner Hicks, 30, was shot in the chest and died in the apartment complex parking lot. Michael Armstead, 25, died two days later.

Prosecutors will present evidence against Thomas, Woodard and Sullivan on May 24. Kennedy will decide then whether they will be ordered to stand trial.

Man held without bond in wife's shooting

A Peyton man accused of fatally shooting his wife was advised of his rights Monday at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

El Paso County Court Judge Stephen Sletta ordered Dennis Harpin, 56, held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of 47-year-old Sherilyn Harpin.

Deputies found Sherilyn Harpin on May 5 dead on the floor of her Peyton-area home on Chaparral Loop West. She was shot behind her right ear.

Dennis Harpin initially told 911 dispatchers he accidentally shot his wife, according to an arrest affidavit. Harpin later told sheriff's deputies his wife shot herself, the affidavit says.

Harpin was uncooperative with a dispatcher and refused to perform CPR on his wife, the affidavit says. His next court date is Thursday.
