JUSTICE

There are three levels of court in El Paso Count: municipal, county and district.

Municipal Court

Municipal court hears cases involving city or town ordinance violations. For more information about Colorado Springs municipal court, please see the Colorado Springs city listings.

County Court

El Paso County Court handles criminal cases, traffic violations and civil actions not involving more than $10,000.

Small Claims Court, Division S: Small claims court involves temporary restraining orders, money disputes under $5,000, property damage cases, and covenant, contract and landlord-tenant disputes.

The defendant must be a resident of El Paso County, or have an office for the transaction of business within the county.

Neither plaintiff nor defendant may be represented by an attorney in this court.

District Court

4th Judicial District Court, 448-7500. Includes El Paso and Teller counties, handles criminal, divorce cases, civil claims and cases on junvenile matters, estates and mental health.

Colorado Court of Appeals

The court of appeals usually is the first court to hear appeals of decisions made by district courts. Determination of an appeal is final unless the Colorado Supreme Court agrees to review the matter.

Colorado Supreme Court

The seven state Supreme Court judges are appointed by the governor. The Colorado Supreme Court is the final court in the Colorado court system.

Jury Duty

County and District courts, information, 448-7788

El Paso County residents ages 18 and older who are physically and mentally fit are eligible for jury duty for County and District courts. Jurors must be able to read, speak and understand English.

Voter registration and drivers license records are used to select jurors at random. The District Court will appoint 12 jurors to sit on the bench for felony trials; six jurors for civil matters in District Court; and three to six jurors for County Court trials.

Grand Jury

The Grand Jury investigates such major criminal cases as homicides, corruption in public office and drug cases. It decides what charges, if any, should be filed. The Grand Jury is chosen from a list of 75 El Paso County residents selected at random and summoned for duty.
