THIS SCHOOL YEAR: District 11 adopted eight goals as a guide to increasing student achievement, which is defined as identifying the needs of each student and developing and implementing an instructional plan that will result in continuous improvement.

Each student will receive the resources and support needed to grow and perform to his or her maximum potential in all content standards.

The eight goals are:

Implement an educational program that maximizes learning and time for instruction;

Continue to attract, develop and retain a diverse, skilled and motivated work force of individuals who are leaders committed to increased student achievement;

Actively involve students, parents and the community in increasing student achievement;

Develop leaders with the requisite skills to accomplish the district's goals and objectives;

Create and maintain safe, enriching and self-disciplined school communities;

Align resources to support the goals and objectives and strategic plan;

Use technology to enhance student-learning opportunities;

Evaluate the effective and efficient use of the district's assets in meeting the capital requirements of its educational program.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: Aug. 20

APPROVED SCHOOL HOLIDAYS:

Sept. 3-6 - Assessment days. K-8 students are excused early. Some students go back for testing in the afternoon.

Sept. 2 - Labor Day

Oct. 14 - Columbus Day/staff training, no students.

Oct. 24-25 - Parent/teacher conferences, no students.

Nov. 11 - Veterans Day

Nov. 27-29 - Thanksgiving break

Dec. 23-Jan. 3 - Winter break

Jan. 6-7 - Teacher work/staff training days, no students.

Jan. 20 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Feb. 14 - Staff training, no students.

Feb. 17 - Presidents Day

March 24-28 - Spring break

April 24 - Assessment 1/2 day. K-8 students dismissed early.

April 25 - Assessment day, no students.

April 25 - Kindergarten registration for 2003-04 begins.

May 8-9 - Assessment days, no students.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL: May 23

APPROVED CLASS SIZE: Call the individual school.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE SPEAKERS: Non-native English speakers are encouraged to visit their neighborhood schools for help. Each site can call on translators for assistance. Some information on D-11's Web site is in Spanish. A Spanish message line is at 520-2012 . Contact the nearest school or call Phyllis Hurley, supervisor of the English As a Second Language program, at 520-2551 .

CHOICE PROCESS: Colorado law allows students to attend any school they choose through a permit process.

The application window for D-11 students who want to attend a school other than their neighborhood school is Nov. 1 to Feb. 1. New families have one month to apply for a choice permit. Permit applications should be picked up at the school the student wants to attend. There is no charge for the permit. Transportation is not provided for choice students. For information, call 520-2035 .

D-11 students wishing to transfer to another district should check with the other district for permit procedures.

SPECIAL-NEEDS STUDENTS: Parents of students with emotional, mental or physical special needs may call Ron Hage, executive director of special education, at 520-2148 for information about services.

BREAKFAST/LUNCH PROGRAM: Cost for school lunch is $1.70 per meal for elementary students and $1.85 for middle and high school students. White milk is 45 cents and chocolate milk is 50 cents. Breakfast, including milk, is 85 cents for elementary students and 95 cents for middle and high school students. Families who meet certain income guidelines may qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Applications are available at each school, or call food services, 520- 2924 , for information. Many schools offer breakfast. Call the individual school for times.

DAY CARE: Before- and after-school day care is available at these elementary schools: Audubon, Bates, Bristol, Carver, Chipeta, Columbia, Fremont, Henry, Jackson, Jefferson, Lincoln, Longfellow, Madison, Midland, Penrose, Queen Palmer, Rudy, Scott, Stratton, Taylor, Trailblazer and Wilson. The federal program Head Start is available at Adams, Audubon, Bristol, Edison, Ivywild, Longfellow, Pike and Queen Palmer. Call schools for times, providers and costs.

REGISTRATION: Elementary and middle school - Students should go to their closest school but are asked to call in advance. Students should bring immunization records, Social Security cards, birth certificates and proof of family residency such as a driver's license, receipt from a utility company or a copy of a lease showing the address.

High school - Students should go to the closest high school to register with that site's registrar. The five high schools are generally open 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. each weekday throughout the summer, but call in advance. Students are asked to bring birth certificates, immunization records, proofs of address and copies of their last transcripts, listing classes taken.
