Brunch kicks off Race for the Cure events

Jane Dallager, wife of the superintendent of the Air Force Academy, hosted the annual Komen Colorado Springs Race for the Cure Survivors' Brunch on July 20 at the Air Force Academy Officers Club.

The brunch to honor 175 local survivors of breast cancer was part of the annual Colorado Springs Race for the Cure, scheduled for Aug. 11 at the academy.

Breast cancer survivors modeled for the fashion show by Regina's Unique Boutique. Among those modeling fall's newest fashions were luncheon co-chair Paula Pearl, Terry Thatcher, Diane Comstock, Lanette Abbey, Haydee Ullrich, Kristin Bowen, Nancy Saltzman and Carol French, 2002 Honorary Survivor from Pueblo County.

All survivors were recognized, with special congratulations going to Kay Waltman, who has survived breast cancer for 56 years.

Among the 300 guests were luncheon co-chair Beccy Lord , wife of Gen. Lance Lord, commander of Air Force Space Command; emcee Lisa Lyden of KOAA-TV; C.J. Moore of Kaiser Permanente; Millie Padilla, 2002 Honorary Survivor from El Paso County; Lisa Noll, 2002 honorary race chair; and Mitzi Fideler and Carol Kelly, founders of the Colorado Springs race.

Opera fans mark milestone

The Pikes Peak Opera League hosted a champagne reception July 14 to celebrate the "Fifty Years of Opera" exhibit at the Pioneers Museum.

Following the welcome by chair Joyce Vogel , Don Jenkins (general director of the former Colorado Opera Festival) delivered a toast in honor of the exhibit, reporting the history of opera in Colorado Springs since 1881.

Jenkins sang a few baritone roles in local operas and eventually became the co-founder and music director of the Colorado Opera Festival.

Several members of the Pikes Peak Opera League active in the original opera association were Svava Chapman , Lindsay and Joanna Fischer, and sopranos Martha Booth and Harriet Brooks, who sang supporting and leading roles.

John Carter, Judy Griest and Murl Sickbert , performers with the Colorado Opera Festival, now perform in Martile Rowland's Opera Theatre of the Rockies. Elizabeth Lilly continues on as vice president of the Pikes Peak Opera League's Phoenix Committee.

Guests enjoyed the lavish costumes and other memorabilia shown in a special collaboration between Matt Mayberry, director of the Pioneers Museum, and Billy McClure, who directed the installation of this exhibit in partnership with Jenkins and costume designer Gypsy Ames .

Enjoying the champagne and hors d'oeuvres were Anthony and Rita Acri , Naomi Arvan , Shantell Autry , Herbert Beattie, Esther Beynon and Alfred Metzger, Martha Booth, Ursula Bird , Fred and Victoria Boswell, Lucile Brumley , Mark Dempsey, John DeRuntz , Stephanie DiCenzo and Kent Borges , Gary and Mary Eiber , Bruce Ellsworth, Fran Folsom, Jackie Foorman , Elinor Garriques , Fred and Susanna Gnadinger , John and Evelyn Kwaak , Terry and Elizabeth Lilly, Henry and Joyce Revane , Betty Rickel , Murl Sickbert, Jerry and Barbara Teske, Bob and Elaine Thompson, Eve Tilly, Linda Weise, Judy Griest, Brodie and Eileen Gerrard-Gough , Adeline Harvey, Gwen Jenkins, Steve Martin and committee members Victoria Boswell, Jack Coiner , Judy Kaiser, Marilyn Kastel and Carla Peperzak .

Golf tourney benefits the blind

More than $25,000 was raised by the 72 golfers playing July 15 in Waste Management's Drive to the Green Gold Tournament at the Country Club of Colorado to benefit the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes.

Prizes were awarded to the three lowest-scoring teams as well as closest-to-the-pin and longest-drive holes. Overall winners Blair Tripodi , Tom Jackovic , Steve Roush and Keith Allo (all from the U.S. Olympic Committee) received hospitality tickets to the July 25- 26 NASCAR 250 Busch Grand National Series Race at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

Other prizes, donated by PPIR, included autographed items by racing stars such as two-time Indy 500 Champion Helio Castroneves and National Open Wheel Champion Gil de Ferran.

Bob Athey and Chris Pratz , both of ICG Communications, made a return appearance to this year's event as the "Bash Brothers," providing beverages, shade and entertainment in a hospitality tent on Hole 14 and raising more than $500 by driving balls 275 yards over the lake and onto the green.

Among those enjoying the day of golf were USABA Executive Director Mark Lucas, Jim Smith, Brad Rhodes, Anna Leahy , Doug Nicoll , Spencer Nicol l, Nikki Athey , Stacey Olsen, Stan Phillips, Doug Hanson, Greg Howard, Vince Greco, Dave Newman, Jon Karroll , Rob Namnoum , Carl Gerhardt, Cary Carpenter, Ed Beaumont, Allen VanWhye Ed Bates, Larry Becker, Mark Johnson, Roger Overby, Ty Taylor, Ed Bates, Larry Becker, Dan De-Waard, Jim Troogstad, Matt Grage and Jimmy Schmidt.

$70,000 goes JA's way

Sweet Adelines entertained guests as they viewed more than 350 silent auction items at Junior Achievement's ninth annual benefit auction June 29 at The Broadmoor's Colorado Hall.
