Velma's family moved to Colorado in 1915 when they Homesteaded a government claim on unimproved prairie land about 26 miles east of Lamar, CO. They initially lived in a half-dugout plywood single room building covered with tarpaper. While there, she attended a small rural school and rode a horse over two miles each way. When Velma was in sixth grade, the family moved to the small nearby town of Hartman, CO, and purchased a farm. She later graduated from the Hartman, H.S. in 1927 and started teaching in a one room schoolhouse in nearby Kiowa County. Her only sibling, Vernon, was born in 1928. She then drove herself each year to attend summer sessions and finally received her B.A. degree in 1939 from the teacher's college in Greeley.
Velma's former school superintendent for the Hartman area had transferred to take a new position as head of the district in Johnstown, north of Denver. He had contacted Velma when a position teaching opened in Windsor, CO. After two years, she met Donald Teller, who had been born and raised in Windsor. They were married there in 1942. After Donald received a job as a State Health Inspector, the state reassigned him here in El Paso County. Velma took a local teaching position in Colorado Springs and retired in 1975 after 24 years teaching in various District 11 grade schools. Two sons were born: Stephen Lee Teller in 1944 and Michael John Teller in 1947.
She is survived by a son, Michael, two grandchildren, and three great grandchildren; all living in Colorado Springs. Also her only sibling, Vernon Manka, of Goldendale, WA.
