Charles Patrick Carroll passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2004. With a firm faith in Jesus Christ his Savior, Charles entered into the joy and peace of the eternal home of his heavenly Father. His parents, Charles and Louise Carroll, preceded him in death. Surviving him is his devoted wife of 40 years, Polly and his sister, Mrs. Clark McCorkle, his children, Ervin Walther, Jon Carroll, Hilary Heijmen, Rick Carroll and Marcia Peterson and eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was born in 1916, in Kansas City, Missouri, where he spent most of his pre-college years. He received his bachelor's degree from Yale University and pursued his graduate studies at Harvard, The University of Berlin, Union Seminary in New York, Alma College and The Church Divinity School of the Pacific. His studies in Germany in 1937 and 1938, during the Nazi period were an important part of the preparation for his work from 1947-1949 with the U.S. Military in governing Germany. His most significant assignment during that period was to serve as Military Observer at the Nuremberg Trials of the Medical Doctors. This experience ignited a life long passion to pursue the ethical issues of abortion, euthanasia and eugenics. On these subjects, he became a leading authority, lecturing and writing extensively in the U.S. and Europe. He also became an international authority on the Holocaust, devoting much of his time from 1972-2002 to research, writing and lecturing on this subject. The massive files that he accumulated in research on these issues have been contributed to the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. Among the places where he pursued research are: The Harvard Law School, The Bunderachieves at Koblenz, Germany, and the Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research at St. John's Abbey in Minnesota.

During his lifetime, Charles held numerous positions in these fields: business, education, government and the Church. Among them are: newspaper editor, book editor, Assistant to the Director of the Brazilian Government Trade Bureau in New York, Teaching Fellow in the Department of Government at Harvard, Secretary to the Department of Theological Cooperation and Assistant to the Director of the National Lutheran Council, Chaplain for Faculty and Students of the University of California-San Francisco Medical Center and Executive Director of the Center for Human Values in the Health Sciences, San Francisco. For nearly 30 years, while holding various positions and carrying on his research, writing and lecturing, he functioned as a priest in the Episcopal Church of the United States. From 1974-2001, Charles and Polly made Colorado Springs, Colorado their home from which he did his research, writing, lecturing and pastoral ministry. For the past two years, they have made Salem, VA their place of residence.
