SPOKANE, Wash. - There's probably never been anyone happier to finish in second place than Ryan Bradley. The Colorado Springs skater struggled for six years competing at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, where he never finished higher than sixth place competing as a senior.
Seven turned out to be his lucky number.
Bradley finished in second place behind Evan Lysacek, who not only skated a clean free skate program but landed a quadruple toe loop late Saturday night. Bradley was second in the free skate.
Colorado Springs' Jeremy Abbott, who is in the Broadmoor Skating Club along with Bradley, placed fourth overall after taking third in the free skate.
Johnny Weir, the 2006 national champion, finished third overall.
Bradley skated to the kissand-cry area and embraced his coach, Tom Zakrajsek, shaking and crying with joy. He waved to his friends and girlfriend in section 201. After doing a television interview, Bradley took his skate guards off, skated back to center ice, and did a back flip, then skated back off.
"Chaos. It was like a swirling bubble," Bradley said when asked what was going through his mind. "I was just so happy. Everything I've been trying to do all season long, and I wasn't quite ready, and I was pushing myself. People were doubting me. It just feels good to have everyone behind me. It's such an amazing feeling I can't even explain it."
Lysacek exited the ice with a standing ovation from the crowd and a score of 284.88. Bradley had 219.21, and Weir 213.20.
