Pair of aces aim to shod needy feet

Two Air Academy High School students have collected hundreds of pairs of shoes to send to the poor in Haiti after watching a video about the living conditions there.
About 1,500 to 2,000 pairs of shoes have been collected since January. The students, 17-year-old Jeff Lucas and 17-year-old Josh Barrick, plan to load the shoes into a donated U-Haul truck in about a week and ship them to Denver. From there, American Airlines will fly them to the impoverished Caribbean nation.
"It was just kind of a spur of the moment kind of thing," Lucas said. "We're just trying to do something nice."
Lucas' mother was involved in Little Voice, a Denver-based nonprofit that uses media such as documentaries to inspire people to help others. It provides "blueprints" for people who want to start fundraisers or supply drives after watching its programs.
For Lucas, it worked. His mother pointed him to one of the group's videos, "Haiti's Small Miracles," which outlines the plight of Haiti's children and provides ways to help them.
The teenager decided to start a shoe drive, Soles for Souls, and recruited his friend to help. They placed bins at Air Academy, the Lynmar Racquet and Health Club, the Soccer Stop and Runners Roost Colorado Springs.
He chose to collect shoes because they tend to wear out fast, and children in Haiti love to play sports. They've also collected some soccer equipment.
