A few freshmen stand out

Welcome, Class of 2011.

Air Force football's freshman class went through an initiation of sorts Wednesday afternoon, spending an entire practice with the varsity for the first time.

While the majority of the approximately 90 freshmen will play on Air Force's junior varsity this season, Falcons coach Troy Calhoun expects some to make an immediate impact on varsity.

Two freshmen in particular have caught Calhoun's eye: cornerback Reggie Rembert and linebacker Kenny Lamendola.

Both spent portions of two earlier practices with the varsity. Rembert will push for a starting spot at corner and might return punts.

Lamendola, Calhoun said, "just seems like he's always around the ball."

Calhoun also said freshman tailback Savier Stephens could force his way into the lineup.

"I think he's a pretty fluid guy with good balance," Calhoun said.

Air Force finished practice with a drill that paired the second- team offense against the first-team defense and the first-team offense against the second-team defense in hurryup situations.

Two freshmen played with the second-team offense -- "Z" wide receiver Nate Carlson and guard Jacob Fogle -- and four freshmen played with the second-team defense -- Rembert, Lamendola and linebackers Stephan Atrice and Will Keuchler.

"I wouldn't be surprised if there probably are about five (freshmen) that are in the twodeep this year," Calhoun said.

Meet the Falcons

Saturday afternoon, from 1:30 to 3, Calhoun, quarterback Shaun Carney, fullback Ryan Williams, linebacker Drew Fowler and safety Bobby Giannini will sign autographs at the academy's visitor center.

On Aug. 18, from 1 to 2:30, Calhoun and several coaches will hold a meet-and-greet to talk about the season in the team auditorium inside the academy fieldhouse.

Etc.

Calhoun said sophomore "X" wide receiver Sean Quintana is moving his way up the depth chart. Calhoun likely won't release a new depth chart until after Saturday's practice.... Sophomore safety Chris Thomas returned to practice Wednesday.... Calhoun said offensive tackle Dan Holder "could be out for in the neighborhood of four to five weeks," with a right knee sprain.
