Motorcyclist raises awareness about Louisiana's coastal erosion

New Orleans CityBusiness,  Jul 30, 2007

Terry Forrette returned this weekend after "Riding the Rim" of the United States to raise awareness about coastal erosion.

His mission was to spread the word about saving America's wetlands in coastal Louisiana after the devastation experienced during hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 when more than 200 square miles of protective wetlands were lost in two days.

Family, friends and fellow motorcyclists cheered Forrette's arrival back home at Mike Bruno's North Shore Harley Dealership Friday following three months on the road.

"Obviously, my trip around the country has been a huge learning experience for me, but I feel confident in saying that the hundreds, possibly thousands, of people I encountered over the last three months learned something as well," said Forrette. "Losing a football field of wetlands every 38 minutes is a serious matter, and I think that Texans, Californians, North Dakotans, Washingtonians, Floridians and everyone in between now have a better understanding of what Louisiana's wetland loss means to the country."

Forrette kicked off his "Riding the Rim" tour in New Orleans at an Earth Day celebration April 21.

Forrette is a respiratory care practitioner, professional speaker and part-time college professor. He has been involved in environmental causes since 1970 when he attended his first Earth Day event in his hometown of Madison, Wis.

Riding the Rim is a partnership between Forrette and the America's Wetland Campaign. For more information visit www.ridingtherim.com.
