The Louisiana Board of Regents granted Southeastern Louisiana University $90,000 to help the university provide professional development to middle school teachers in English, math, science and language arts in St. Tammany, Orleans and Washington parishes.

Southeastern mathematics instructor Rebecca Muller, along with two Southeastern instructors, will work with 30 middle school teachers in six schools to improve their student standardized test scores.

"We will be doing on-site academic assistance and work with schools and teachers in different formats such as team teaching," Muller said. "We will also help teachers develop their lesson plans and change their classroom assessment (techniques) so they better reflect the skills and concept necessary to help students achieve better test scores."

The six schools are participants in the state's Gear Up program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, which is meant to help low-income students improve academic performance in middle school.
