Southeastern Louisiana Univ. starts instituting heightened admission

Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond is jumping ahead of schedule in instituting new admission standards that will be required statewide by the state Board of Regents in 2005.

The university won approval from the University of Louisiana System to heighten its admissions requirements beginning in summer 2004, said Southeastern President Randy Moffett.

Freshmen now must meet one of three requirements - an ACT composite of at least 20, rank in the upper 50% of their high school graduating class or at least a 2.0 high school grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) on core college-prep courses.

Starting next summer, students who need more than one developmental course will not be fully admitted to Southeastern.

Southeastern will collaborate with community colleges to ensure that students affected by the changes can pursue post-secondary studies while fulfilling their developmental requirements to meet Southeastern's standards, Moffett said.
