Tulane University researchers released a report that says problem drinkers who live in rural areas have a high probability of skipping their HIV treatment schedules. Tulane epidemiologists studied interviews of 273 patients from eight rural clinics across the state. They found that about one in three people with HIV reported skipping at least one dose of their treatments in the previous week.

HIV/AIDS is often thought to have a tremendous impact in cities, but people living in rural areas may face different barriers to taking proper care of themselves, said Hamish Mohammed, a graduate student at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and lead author of the report.
