Thibodaux High School grad wins 13 college scholarships

New Orleans CityBusiness, Nov 22, 2004 by Staff

Shayla Price, a graduate of Thibodaux High School, knew her parents couldn't afford to send her to college.

So beginning in her junior year, Price, now 19, spent more than four hours a day searching for college scholarships on the Internet. She filled out about 60 forms for scholarships ranging from $100 or $40,000.

Her work paid off - big time.

Price, a freshman at Xavier University, won 13 scholarships worth more than $100,000. She won't pay a dime to major in business with a concentration in sales and marketing.

Price, who graduated high school with a grade point average of 4.0, was a class valedictorian. She will be the first person in her family to go to college.

Price gave these tips for winning scholarships:

* Apply for every scholarship possible.

* Get advice from your teachers and family.

* Make it a habit to work on your search for scholarships.

* Never give up. Believe in yourself. If you believe, you will achieve.
