2,400-passenger 'Sun' cruise ship coming to N.O.

Norwegian Cruise Lines is returning service to New Orleans in the fall of 2006 with a larger ship.Norwegian Cruise Lines, one of the three major cruise lines with home-ported ships in New Orleans, will bring the 2,400-passenger Sun to New Orleans this fall. Norwegian decided to bring a bigger ship to New Orleans and it shows the company is confident enough in the market to bring back the bigger ships, said Chris Bonura, spokesman for the Port of New Orleans.Prior to Hurricane Katrina, Norwegian was using the 1,800- passenger ship Dream.
Norwegian will be the first cruise line to home-port ships in New Orleans.Cruise embarkations and disembarkations reached 735,000 in 2004. New Orleans had been on pace to break the 1 million passenger mark by 2008 - making the Port of New Orleans one of the fastest-growing ports in the world. The cruise industry generates $226 million in direct and indirect spending annually in New Orleans.
