Loyola to 'Take Back the Night' Wednesday

New Orleans CityBusiness, Oct 6, 2007

Loyola University New Orleans will hold its 16th annual "Women and Men Take Back the Night" march at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Marquette Hall horseshoe.

The event is designed primarily to heighten awareness of sexual violence against women, men, and children and to empower female survivors. The evening will begin with speakers from Loyola, Tulane University, and the New Orleans community who will share their personal stories of abuse and healing.

Following the speeches at 6:45 p.m., a candlelight march will proceed to Roger's Chapel on Tulane's campus. At 7 p.m., the closing ceremonies will offer an open microphone.

The Take Back the Night march will also hold a raffle fundraiser in support of women's and survivor services in the greater New Orleans area. Raffle tickets will be $1 each with prizes to be announced. Donations of money and goods can be brought to the Take Back the Night tables on the first floor of the Danna Student Center through October 10 and at the event itself, or to the University Counseling Center at Loyola on the second floor of the Danna Student Center. Suggested donation items are underwear, socks, personal hygiene products and office supplies for women's shelters. T-shirts will also be on sale prior to and during the events with part of the sales benefiting the fundraiser.

Donations will benefit the Metropolitan Center for Women and Children and Crescent House/The Family Justice Center.

The march is open to women, men, survivors and supporters. For more information, contact Ilyse Goldberg at 865-3835 or isgoldbe@loyno.edu.
