National Geographic to hold photo camp for N.O. students

New Orleans CityBusiness, Oct 18, 2007

National Geographic will hold a photography camp for 20 New Orleans teenagers from Oct. 26-29, Loyola University New Orleans said.

Loyola's mass communications program will supply photojournalism students to serve as mentors to Vietnamese-American students, ages 14 to 18, who will document their lives and surroundings in photographs.

This is the second year in a row that the National Geographic photo camp has come to New Orleans in partnership with Loyola.

In April 2006, National Geographic selected 15 high school students, supplied them with cameras and photography basics and asked them to document New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The slideshow, "After the Disaster: A Look at New Orleans," was put on display at the Cabildo and is still viewable on National Geographic's Web site.

The camp, taught by photojournalists and photo editors, is held about a dozen times a year in U.S. cities. Students are loaned cameras and encouraged to photographically document their communities and write about their experiences.
