American Library Association to return to N.O. in 2011, 2018

New Orleans CityBusiness, Apr 25, 2008

The American Library Association kept a pre-Katrina promise to New Orleans when it held its annual conference in the city in June 2006, less than a year after Katrina battered the city.

ALA this week said it will return to the Crescent City for its 2011 and 2018 annual conventions.

For the 2006 convention, nearly 17,000 librarians and library supporters attended. ALA members also helped in the city's recovery, signing up for more than 22 volunteer projects to help restore libraries and assist Habitat for Humanity, Common Ground and others involved in the rebuilding.

"When ALA went to New Orleans in 2006, people thought we were crazy," said ALA Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels. "The coming of the librarians ended up being one of the biggest national news stories of the year. We showed the country that librarians are serious about building community. The people of New Orleans were wonderful, and we had one of the most moving experiences and exciting conferences in our history. We're really looking forward to returning to one of America's most wonderful, and exotic, cities."
