W. Allis/W. Milwaukee Day care program proposed at schools
A pilot day care program could be in place at three elementary schools in the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District by the start of the 1995-'96 school year.
Under a proposal already endorsed by committee and awaiting School Board approval, the district would contract with Children's World Learning Center to provide before- and after- school care at Lincoln, Pershing, and Walker Elementary Schools.
Parents would drop off their children starting at 6:30 a.m. and arrange to have them stay at school until 6 p.m. No meals would be provided.
Superintendent Harold Sloan said the fee has not yet been determined, but current estimates put it between $3.50 and $5 per morning session, and $6 to $7 per afternoon. Those wanting to leave their children at the center for an hour or two would likely be charged a minimum fee. There is a break-even point for the program which, Sloan said, requires about 10-15 students to participate per session.
He said the pilot program would be watched carefully to determine if the service should be continued or expanded.
Circuit Court Man charged with negligent homicide
A man who allegedly told police he killed his friend while mishandling a gun was charged Wednesday with negligent homicide and maintaining a drug house.
Brandon L. Smith, 19, was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court in the March 2 death of Andwar Griffin, 17. Police found crack cocaine and marijuana in Smith's apartment, in the 4600 block of N. 30th St., where Griffin was shot, according to the criminal complaint.
Griffin died at Doyne Hospital in Wauwatosa. He was killed by a gunshot wound to the left side of his head, according to the medical examiner's report. Smith shot him when, while posing with .357-caliber revolver in front of a bathroom mirror, the gun accidentally discharged, according to the criminal complaint.
Police also confiscated a closed-circuit video camera and television from the home, as well as drug paraphernalia, a .22-caliber handgun and a rifle, according to the criminal complaint.
