AXIS 2004; From the 'burbs to the 'hood

The era of AXIS in draughty barns in the 'burbs looks, at last, to be over.Next year's 25th AXIS Awards will return to Sky City's new convention centre, if CAANZ's Peter Loughlin, who produced this year's show, has anything to do with it (which he does!)."The venue worked very well - and being central appeals," he says.

This year's attendance was 870, which was a comfortable fit in what is now Auckland's biggest and most stylish one-level convention facility - but Sky City is theoretically capable of holding 1000. "It was big enough," says Loughlin, "but we wouldn't want to cram in any more."There are a few elements Loughlin would like to see "tweaked" but he says these will be minor. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, he says, but suggestions are still coming in to CAANZ - and he'd like more (to peter@caanz.co.nz). "When all these have been considered over the next few weeks, we'll start firming up our plans for AXIS 2005."Next year should also see the return of buses to move "jolly" post-awards commuters between Sky City and the late-late party venue - likely to be Coast bar again. Around 350-400 made the trip downtown this year, and buses would be a welcome and responsible addition.
