Disk-based backup for SMBs

Malaysian Business, Jul 1, 2007 by Cynthia Ann Peterson

BUSINESS continuity is not a concern only for large companies. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) also have to ensure their data are stored and protected effectively, as data loss can ruin a company. With more and more SMBs recognising the importance of data protection, Hewlett-Packard (HP) has introduced its HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System. This disk-to- disk (D2D) backup and recovery solution was designed with the needs of the market segment in mind.

`We've thought about what SMBs want. They tend to have few IT staff and probably no specialists in storage. The system deployed, therefore, needs to be simple, affordable and reliable,' says David Rogers, director of product marketing, SMB Data Protection Devices Business Segment, HP StorageWorks Division, HP.

The solution is aimed at SMBs that currently have tape-based solutions in place, as the disk-based system addresses issues such as recovery time, management of media as well as cost.

`If there is a local copy on disk, companies can save as they will not need so many tape drives. Weekly backups can go to tape,' explains Rogers.

The system can be managed by the companies themselves, and allows customers to consolidate backups for up to four servers to a single device.

This HP StorageWorks D2D Backup System is available in two models- HP StorageWorks D2D110 and HP StorageWorks D2D120 with prices beginning from RM8,000 and RM12,000 respectively.
