On April 11, IBM Japan and Sanyo Electric (TSE: 6764) jointly announced that they have prototyped a hybrid fuel cell system for IBMs ThinkPad notebooks.

The prototype micro diet methanol fuel cell system can supply up to 8 hours of power per cartridge.

The new system is compatible with most of the current ThinkPad models.

Further, it includes auxiliary bay IBMs Ultra Bay Slim to supplement peak power consumption for business applications.

The two companies expect that the new fuel cell system will pave the way for an improved mobile computing environment.
