Sony Prototypes 82-inch LCD TV Supporting New Video Color Space

Tokyo, Jan 6, 2006 - (JCN) - Sony announced on January 5 that it has prototyped the world's first LCD TV that has supported xvYCC, a new international video color space standard, and is showcasing it at the 2006 International CES in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A new International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard scheduled to go into effect in January, xvYCC expands the current color data range by about 80% based on Munsell Color Cascade, a color chart that defines all natural object colors and is used to evaluate the color expression of displays.

The prototype incorporates TRILUMINOS, a backlight that uses the LED with three independent colors (red, green, and blue) to further enhance xvYCC-compliant video images. The 82-inch LCD TV also features a full high-definition panel (1,920x1,080 pixels), ensuring superior picture quality.

Sony promotes the Full HD World concept in its efforts to enable consumers to enjoy a wider variety of high-resolution video sources at home via digital high definition broadcast, HDV-ready digital camcorders and new optical discs such as Blu-ray. The latest xvYCC standard enables the reproduction of truly natural and high- resolution picture images in a wider color range, paving the way for a new display era.
