NEC Electronics Develops Audio Chip to Enable 50 Hours of Continuous

Tokyo, Jan 13, 2006 - (JCN) - NEC Electronics has developed the muPD99910, an audio processor that allows music to be continuously played for up to 50 hours on a cellular phone.
A type of companion chip that is used with an application processor, the audio chip integrates a dedicated low-power music play processor and a digital signal processor. It also features an SD card interface, and consequently it supports Content Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) for SD cards, which enables handset users to download music data without having to infringe upon copyrights.

Available in small quantities starting on January 12, the chip is sample-priced at 1,500 yen ($13.15). NEC plans to launch volume production at 400,000 units per month in April.
