Butterfly garden best in country

A FLOWER bed with a butterfly design made from 6,000 plants has scooped a top award for a North Wales council.

Conwy County Borough Council entered the flower bed for the Tatton Show this year.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) awards the Wigan Cup for the best exhibit submitted by a local authority during the year.

The butterfly bed showed two butterflies, made entirely out of plants, at rest on a flowerbed. The whole design was made up from approximately 6,000 plants all grown in peat-free compost at the council's nursery in Tan Llan, Old Colwyn.

The cup will be handed over at the Westminster Horticultural Halls in London in March 2009 to Conwy's parks manager Peter Barton- Price, who designed and created the butterfly bed.

Coun Mike Priestley, Conwy's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "I'd like to congratulate the parks staff on this prestigious award and thank them for their hard work, commitment and flair."

Last year, over 30 local authorities took part in various RHS shows.

Each spring, the RHS reviews all prizewinners from its shows in the previous year and presents its awards to exhibitors who excelled.
