Sun-beds warning

0 Comments | Northumberland Gazette (Alnwick, England), June 19, 2007

MORE should be done to alert tan-addicts to the dangers of sun beds, says MEP Fiona Hall.

She said: "More and more salons are using stronger ultra-violet lamps, higher than UK and EU recommendations, increasing the skin cancer risk to sun-bed users.

"It is time to give a clear message that misuse of sun beds can have fatal consequences."

But those wanting to go blonde are to be given extra protection, from dangerous hair dyes which can cause painful skin allergies, thanks to the EU.

The European Commission says that it is taking scientific advice about plans to restrict the substances permitted in hair dyes sold anywhere in Europe.

Last month the EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Products claimed many substances in hair dyes have the potential to sensitise skin, which can lead to skin allergies. MEP Fiona Hall welcomed the announcement and hopes it will allow people to colour their hair safely.

Meanwhile MEPs have voted to cut the cost of making and receiving mobile phone calls abroad.
